Meet our unofficial University of Melbourne mascot – the cuddly and soft ‘Barry the bear’. This small version of Barry proudly wears a classic University of Melbourne t-shirt with his name printed on the back. Barry the bear is a much-loved keepsake, perfect for students, graduands and alumni.

Why ‘Barry’?

‘Barry’ the bear is the namesake of Sir Redmond Barry, the first Chancellor of the University of Melbourne (1853–1880). A significant figure in the state of Victoria, Sir Redmond founded the University of Melbourne and the State Library of Victoria and was a respected Supreme Court judge who presided over many prominent cases, including the final trial of Ned Kelly and the Eureka Stockade treason trials. His notable work assisting and representing Indigenous people put him at odds with some legal circles and society in general during Victoria’s early years.
